About this work

This painting shows a dark, moody harbor scene at night. Three boats sit in the water—one with bright red sails, another small and shadowy, and a third partly hidden. A moon hangs low in the sky, casting a faint glow over the water, while thick, dramatic clouds loom above. On the dock, two figures stand near the edge, looking out toward the boats. The red sails stand out sharply against the dark background, drawing your eye. The rest of the scene blends into shadows, making the boats and dock feel quiet and still. If you like this kind of lighting, look up chiaroscuro.
