Frederick V, Elector Palatine, Later King of Bohemia is a 1601 ink by Crispijn van de Passe I, a Renaissance work, held at Rosenwald Collection.
This is a black-and-white portrait of a man in fancy 17th-century clothes. He’s wearing a high-collar ruff, a detailed doublet, and a chain around his neck. His right hand holds a small object—maybe a letter or a scroll—while his left rests on his chest. The background is plain, but the edges of the print have Latin words wrapped in a decorative border. The artist used tiny lines and shading to build up the details, giving the picture its texture. This kind of printmaking is called engraving.
