History & Provenance
Painted in 1885, Girl with a Hoop was commissioned by Senator Étienne Goujon, the father of the sitter. Following the artist’s completion, the work remained in the Goujon family before passing by inheritance to E. Chapuis, the sitter’s husband. In 1920, the painting was offered at a sale at Galerie George Petit in Paris but was withdrawn; it was subsequently sold that same year to the dealer Paul Rosenberg and Co.
The ownership chain continued through the Marquis de Rochecouste and the Bernheim-Jeune gallery, with Knoedler & Co. acting on joint account in 1928 and 1929. By December 1929, the work returned to Bernheim-Jeune before moving to Galerie Thannhauser in Berlin. It was acquired by Max Silberberg of Breslau prior to 1931 and sold at his estate auction in Paris in June 1932.
The painting was purchased by Chester Dale in New York and entered the National Gallery of Art collection in 1963 as his bequest, where it is held under accession number 1963.10.171.
