This small engraving shows Abraham Hart’s face in sharp black and white. His coat is dark, his shirt collar crisp. Tiny details pop in the folds of fabric and the strands of his hair. Saint-Mémin used cross-hatching to create soft shadows on Hart’s face. The lines are fine but build up real depth in his cheek and jaw. See how the paper’s rough texture leaves tiny flecks in the darkest areas. Look up Saint-Mémin, Charles B. J. Févret de.
