This engraving shows a man in a rough wool coat and knit cap. Light falls on his face, leaving the background dark. His hands grip a walking stick. Mezzotint uses a roughed metal plate to make deep blacks and soft shadows. This lets the artist build smooth tones. You almost feel the wool under your fingers.
