Sfânta Familie is a 1684 by Gottfried Schalken, a Baroque work, held at Brukenthal National Museum.
This painting shows a woman holding a baby while an older man looks on. Above them floats a small child with wings. The woman wears a light dress with red fabric draped over her arm, and the older man has a beard and dark clothing. The background is dark, making the figures stand out. The woman’s face looks calm, almost like she’s smiling softly. The winged child above seems to be reaching toward her. The painting uses shadows and light to give the figures a three-dimensional feel. This technique is called chiaroscuro.
Godfried Schalcken was a Dutch artist who specialized in genre paintings and portraits.
