By the 19th century, the painting belonged to Infante Don Sebastián Gabriel de Borbón y Braganza in Pau, passing to his heirs in 1876. The work later surfaced in Madrid by 1915 and was traded through Berlin, London, and New York dealers before being purchased in March 1930 by Andrew W. Mellon. Mellon deeded the piece to the A. W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust in 1934, and it was gifted to the National Gallery of Art in 1937.

The painting is held in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., where it is recorded as accessioned from the Andrew W. Mellon collection. Its provenance traces from Diego de Guevara in Brussels, through Mencía de Mendoza in Valencia, to Infante Don Sebastián Gabriel de Borbón y Braganza in Pau. After passing through dealers in Madrid, Berlin, and London, it was purchased in March 1930 by Andrew W. Mellon and later gifted to the National Gallery of Art in 1937.

The work was exhibited in the 2006–2007 National Gallery of Art show Prayers and Portraits: Unfolding the Netherlandish Diptych, where it was centered on Diego de Guevara.
