Henrietta Marchant Liston (Mrs. Robert Liston)

The portrait of Henrietta Marchant Liston was painted by Gilbert Stuart in 1800, executed in oil on canvas. It descended within the sitter's family through her grand-niece and heir, Henrietta Ramage Liston Foulis (d. 1850) of Millburn Tower, County Edinburgh, passing to her son Sir James Liston Foulis, 9th baronet, and then to his son Sir William Liston Foulis, 10th baronet, both of whom held the painting at Woodhall and Millburn Tower. On 16 December 1919, the work entered the art market through P. & D. Colnaghi & Obach of London on joint account with M. Knoedler & Co. of New York, and was sold in April 1920 to Elbert H. Gary of New York.

Following Gary's death, it appeared in the 8 December 1934 American Art Association sale of his estate (lot 385), from which Chester Dale acquired it. Dale subsequently gave the painting to the National Gallery of Art in 1960.

The portrait is held in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., having entered the institution in 1960 as a gift from Chester Dale. Prior to this acquisition, the work appeared in the art market following the estate sale of Elbert H. Gary, where it was offered by the American Art Association in New York on December 8, 1934, as lot number 385. Dale purchased the painting at this auction before eventually donating it to the museum.

Earlier ownership included the Liston Foulis family in Scotland, followed by a joint holding by dealers P. & D. Colnaghi & Obach and M. Knoedler & Co. in 1919, before its sale to Gary in April 1920.

The 1800 oil on canvas portrait of Henrietta Marchant Liston by Gilbert Stuart remained in the Liston family for three generations before being sold in 1919 to Elbert H. Gary, then acquired by Chester Dale, and donated to the National Gallery of Art in 1960. Its continuous provenance from the sitter’s descendants to major American collectors illustrates the painting’s documented history and scholarly interest. The work is listed in the Gallery’s collection as a portrait by Stuart, noted for its oil medium and canvas support.

Inclusion in the Gallery’s displays has contributed to ongoing evaluation of Stuart’s portraiture and the sitter’s representation in early nineteenth‑century art.
