Satyrs around a Fire is a 1628 ink by Herman van Swanevelt, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print shows a dark forest with thick trees and tangled branches. In the lower right corner, three half-naked figures—likely satyrs—sit around a small fire, drinking and laughing. The background has rolling hills and more trees, all drawn with sharp lines and deep shadows. The artist used a technique that scratches into metal plates to create the image. This makes the lines look both precise and slightly rough. Next, look up etching to see how this method works.
Herman van Swanevelt (1603–1655) was a Dutch artist, born in Woerden.
