About this work

This painting shows a man and woman standing side by side. The man wears a long white robe with red trim, a yellow hat, and holds a small metal cup and a decorated stick. The woman is dressed in a light-colored sari with gold jewelry, holding a metal pitcher. The background is a flat blue sky. Notice how the colors are bright but slightly faded, and the figures stand out sharply against the sky. The man’s hat and the woman’s jewelry add small details that catch your eye. The story of this work

Overview

Two framed paintings from a series of six depict an unidentified man and woman dressed in white, each set against a plain blue background. The man is shown wearing a pendant and an ornament featuring a Hanuman figure, while holding a conch shell and a gong; the woman holds a pot. The works were transferred from the India Museum in 1879 and entered the collection in 1880 as part of a donation by P. F. Campbell-Johnston.
