About this work

This photo shows Adah Isaacs Menken posing on a chair in a dramatic costume. She’s dressed for a role, with flowing fabric and a serious look. The photo is an old albumen print, pasted on stiff card. These small photos were called “cartes de visite.” People collected them like trading cards. They were cheap and popular in the 1860s. Look up the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more of these Victorian star photos.
