About this work

This painting shows a long wooden boat floating on calm water. Three people are on the boat—two standing near the center, pulling on ropes, and one at the back, steering with a long pole. The boat has a curved roof made of woven material, and the water around it is barely rippled. The boat looks like it’s built for long trips, maybe for trade or travel. The people are dressed simply, and the whole scene feels quiet and focused. If you like this, check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more boats like this.

The story of this work

Overview

The painting Jiu Jiang Huo Chuan, created in 1810, is a rectangular work featuring a boat with upward-curving ends and a central cabin. A half-raised sail is mounted on a mast, and three figures are positioned on the vessel. Originally part of a 50-sheet folio illustrating various boats, this image depicts a nighttime ferry on the Pearl River and was produced as a mass souvenir item.
