Quails is a 1800 paint by Unknown, a Patna School of Painting work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This painting shows a group of quails. The quails are painted in a realistic style, which was popular among European traders who bought these types of paintings in China. These paintings were often made to show exotic plants and animals that Europeans hadn't seen before. You can learn more about this type of art at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The painting depicts two brown quails positioned on a grassy mound, with tall green leaves and a pink flower rising in the background. Its corners are flattened, forming a distinctive border. Produced in Canton (Guangzhou) around 1800, the work belongs to a category of images manufactured in China for European buyers during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was acquired from E. Parsons and entered the collection in 1889.
