Rama, Lakshmana and Sita is a 1885 paint by Unknown, a Impressionism work, depicting Kalighat, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This painting shows three figures standing together under a red umbrella. The person in the middle sits on a yellow platform, holding a small cup. The two others stand on either side, dressed in bright red and purple robes with gold trim. A small dark figure kneels in front, holding the umbrella’s pole. The bold outlines and flat colors are typical of *kalighat* paintings, a style from 19th-century India. Look up kalighat to see more examples of this vibrant art tradition.
The artwork is an opaque watercolor painting on paper from 1885, depicting the figures of Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita, with Hanuman positioned at their feet. It is part of a series acquired by the museum in 1950 from Miss M. Steele, whose mother, a Sanskrit scholar at Cambridge, had inherited the collection in 1894. The collection may have been originally gathered by Steele's grandmother, who had lived in India for a time.
