Sowing Seeds is a 1800 paint by Unknown, a Romanticism work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
You see men sowing seeds in a field. This painting is one of 12 that show the tea industry in China. It was made for Europeans who wanted to know how tea was grown and processed. A rectangular watercolor painting in blues and greens depicts farmers sowing seeds on a tea farm, part of a set of twelve works illustrating the Chinese tea industry. Produced around 1800, the series reflects Europe’s interest in understanding tea cultivation and processing methods, as China was the world’s sole tea supplier before the mid-18th century. The work was later acquired by the institution in 1894 through a donation by Mrs. L. MacKenzie.
