The print illustrates the tomb of Héloise and Abelard, a 12th-century couple whose ill-fated love affair and subsequent correspondence have become legendary. The tomb is shown in Père Lachaise cemetery, Paris.
Technique & Style
The print features a dark, shadowy atmosphere, with a small figure kneeling beside the tomb, faintly illuminated. The tombstone bears the names of the two lovers, Héloise and Abelard, carved in stone.
