Study for "Greek Girls Bathing" is a 1872 oil by Elihu Vedder, a Impressionism work, depicting Dancing, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows three women bathing in a rocky pool. One sits on a stone, another kneels in the water, the third bends forward to wash her hair. The paper has a slight yellow tint that makes the flesh tones glow. Vedder made this study for a bigger painting but kept it simple. He focused on light, not details. Notice how the shadows on the rocks look almost blue. Compare this to his later work at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
Elihu Vedder (26 February 1836 – 29 January 1923) was an American symbolist painter, book illustrator and poet from New York City.
