Little Nude Figure is a 1868 ink by James McNeill Whistler, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a single figure standing sideways, arms resting at their sides. The lines are loose and quick, with lots of cross-hatching on the hair and clothes. The paper has a textured, aged look, and there’s a small signature in the corner. The artist used a technique called drypoint to create these sharp, webby lines. It’s a way to make fine details by scratching into a metal plate. Look up etching next to see how it works.
James Abbott McNeill Whistler was an American painter in oils and watercolor, and printmaker, active during the American Gilded Age and based primarily in the United Kingdom.
