L'opera fu prodotta in un periodo in cui l'artista, stabilito all'Aia, era stato recentemente iscritto alla confraternita dei pittori Confrérie Pictura nel 1773. Sebbene van Os avesse iniziato la sua carriera dipingendo marine, a quella data aveva già spostato il suo focus sulle nature morte floreali e fruttifere, adottando lo stile di Jan van Huysum. Il dipinto fu eseguito due anni prima del suo matrimonio con Susanna de La Croix nel 1775 e rappresenta la sua affermata reputazione nel genere della pittura floreale all'interno della Repubblica Olandese.

Jan van Os (1744-1808) è stato un pittore olandese noto soprattutto per le nature morte di frutta e fiori, un genere a cui partecipa Still Life with Flowers, Fruit and Birds (1774). Formatosi sotto la guida di Aert Schouman all'Aia, inizialmente dipinse marine prima di dedicarsi a composizioni floreali modellate sullo stile di Jan van Huysum, tipicamente disponendo i fiori su un davanzale di marmo contro uno sfondo verde. Le sue nature morte gli valsero una reputazione internazionale, con opere esposte in Inghilterra, Francia e Germania. È considerato la figura fondatrice della famiglia di artisti Van Os: i suoi figli Pieter Gerardus van Os, Maria Margaretha van Os e Georgius Jacobus Johannes van Os, nonché suo nipote Pieter Frederik van Os, divennero tutti pittori, e li istruì insieme a Petronella van Woensel.
