About this work

This crowded room looks like a busy tavern. A group of people in old-fashioned clothes sit at wooden tables, talking and drinking. Some stand near the back, while others slump in chairs. A dog lies on the floor, and tools and a basket sit in the corner. The walls are dark, and the light comes from somewhere out of sight. The artist paid close attention to the faces—some look tired, others curious. The clothes and tools hint at everyday life, not fancy scenes. Next, check out chiaroscuro to see how light and shadow create drama in paintings.
