About this work

An old man kneels on rocky ground while a winged angel hovers above him, hand raised in blessing. Behind them, sheep graze in a quiet valley. This scene tells the story of Joachim, who was told he’d have a child after years of waiting. Dürer carved it into wood, so every line had to be sharp and clear—no room for mistakes. The angel’s wings are so detailed you can almost count the feathers. Look up more of Dürer’s woodcuts to see how he turned simple blocks into stories.
