Jesus with the Pharisees is a 1635 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This etching shows a group of people standing in a line, facing forward. The figures wear long robes and hats, and some hold staffs. In the background, trees and buildings stretch across a hilly landscape, with a few people walking in the distance. Notice how the artist used sharp lines and shadows to create drama—even though it’s all in black and white. The scene looks busy but controlled, almost like a stage set. Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
