About this work

John Constable painted a quiet stretch of the Stour River. The water flows under a bridge near Stratford St Mary. It winds past Dedham’s tall church tower toward Harwich’s estuary. Constable often worked outdoors to catch light and weather just right. His oil sketches helped him shape this scene. The result feels fresh and natural. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see it in person.

The story of this work

Overview

The painting portrays the Stour valley in Essex, with the river flowing beneath the bridge at Stratford St Mary and continuing through Dedham, where its tall church tower is visible, before reaching the estuary at Harwich. Constable’s naturalistic approach and luminous effects reflect his habit of creating oil sketches outdoors. The work may have been the altarpiece painted for Brantham Church, as suggested by John Constable’s diary entry from 1804.
