Ou peut on être mieux ... is a 1841 ink by Honoré Daumier, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This lithograph shows four musicians on a Paris street. One plays a violin, another a flute. Their faces look tired or bored, not happy. Daumier made this during the 1840s. He often drew regular people, not fancy subjects. This one pokes fun at street performers who play for coins. It feels like a quick sketch, not a polished work. Honoré-Victorin Daumier was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker, whose many works offer commentary on the social and political life in France, from the Revolution of 1830 to the fall of the Second French Empire in 1870.
