History & Provenance

David Teniers the Younger completed this oil-on-canvas group portrait in 1643, signing and dating the work in the lower left corner. Created specifically for the main hall of the Oude Voetboog guild house in Antwerp, the painting likely served as a gift from the artist, who was a guild member, in exchange for exemption from mandatory guard duties. The guild retained ownership until 1649, when financial distress forced the sale of this work and a painting by Rubens to the artist Gerard Hoet.

The pair subsequently entered the collection of the Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel before being seized by Napoleonic troops in 1806. Assigned to Empress Joséphine Beauharnais, the canvas hung at the Château de Malmaison until 1814, when she sold it along with thirty-seven other works to Tsar Alexander I of Russia. It has remained in the Hermitage Museum collection in Saint Petersburg since that acquisition.
