The portrait of Pope Paul V by Domenichino is dated 1618 and was painted during the sitter’s papacy (1605–1621). Commissioned in Rome, the work was created as an official papal likeness and remained in Italy until at least the early modern period. By the late nineteenth or early twentieth century it had entered the collection of the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, where it is held today. The painting’s dimensions are 288 cm in height and 209 cm in width.
