About this work

This image shows a rough, colorful scene with three figures. One person with a halo and a crown of thorns stands in the center, holding a whip and a scroll. Another figure, shirtless and holding a jug, looks toward them. A small child in yellow stands nearby, holding a red object. The background has a tree and a building, and the whole scene is painted in flat, bright colors. The text on the scrolls is in German and seems to be a religious message. This style of art was made by carving into wood and coloring it by hand. Look up woodcut to see how this printing method worked.
