Italian Joust of Peace is a 1514 ink by German 16th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
Two knights in polished armor charge on decorated horses. Their lances crash with a sharp snap. Bright watercolor glows behind them like a stage set. The artist mixed ink and watercolor in a tricky way called glazing. That’s many thin, see-through paint layers to build rich color. This sheet is one of the first to mix those two mediums so freely. Look for similar bright glazing next time you visit the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
A German artist from the late 1500s drew lively scenes of knights clashing in parades and mock battles.
