Italian Joust of Peace is a 1514 ink by German 16th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This drawing shows two armored knights on horseback clashing lances in a joust. One lance shatters against polished steel armor. The horses’ trappings match their riders’ fancy armor. The artist used brown ink and watercolor glazes to build up rich, deep colors. You can still see the faint black chalk lines underneath. Look at how the splintered lance wood catches the light. Try sketching this scene yourself at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
A German artist from the late 1500s drew lively scenes of knights clashing in parades and mock battles.
