Italian Joust of Peace is a 1514 ink by German 16th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This ink and watercolor drawing shows two armored knights on horseback with lances raised. One lance is already splintering against the other’s gleaming breastplate. The artist layered colors so the gold and blue details pop against the brown ink. The scene mixes real armor with fanciful decorations. The horses wear plumes and the riders’ armor has etched patterns. It looks more like a parade than a real fight. You can see this at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
A German artist from the late 1500s drew lively scenes of knights clashing in parades and mock battles.
