Italian Joust of Peace is a 1514 ink by German 16th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
Two armored knights on horseback crash lances in mid-air. Their armor gleams with gold trim and bright colors. The rider on the left has a long lance that shatters against the other’s chest plate. The artist used watercolor in thin layers, called glazing, to make the armor look shiny. The horses’ muscles show through their harnesses. A crowd of tiny figures watches in the background. It’s a lively scene full of motion. The paper looks old but still holds strong colors. Look up the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
A German artist from the late 1500s drew lively scenes of knights clashing in parades and mock battles.
