Italian Joust of Peace is a 1514 ink by German 16th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
The painting shows two armored knights on horseback mid-joust. Their lances clash. One splinters against polished armor. The horses’ tack is richly decorated in gold. This isn’t a real battle scene. Jousts like this were choreographed shows for nobles. The artist used watercolor to add bright colors over the ink drawing. Look up the National Gallery of Art, Washington to see this piece in person.
A German artist from the late 1500s drew lively scenes of knights clashing in parades and mock battles.
