Allegory – “Vision in the prison” is a 1890 oil by Henryk Rodakowski, held at National Museum in Warsaw.
This painting shows a dramatic scene with many figures. At the top, a group of people in colorful robes stand together, some holding objects. Below them, a dark space with people sitting or lying down is visible. The colors are muted, with shades of brown and gray dominating the lower half, while the upper half features brighter hues. A striking detail is the contrast between the light and dark areas, with the top section being much brighter than the bottom. This contrast creates a sense of depth and highlights the figures in the upper part of the painting. The use of chiaroscuro, a technique that uses strong contrasts between light and dark, adds to the dramatic effect of the scene.
Henryk Rodakowski (1823–1894) was an artist, born in Lviv.
