Two Doorways is a 1880 by James McNeill Whistler, a Impressionism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows two dark archways under a bridge, with water in front. A lone figure stands inside the left arch, while a boat glides past the right one. The buildings around them are rough and textured, with lots of lines and shadows. The artist focused on how light and dark play off each other to create depth. This style was common in etchings of the time. Look up chiaroscuro to see how this technique works in other art.
James Abbott McNeill Whistler was an American painter in oils and watercolor, and printmaker, active during the American Gilded Age and based primarily in the United Kingdom.
