Ox-Cart. View between Ancona and Sinigaglia
1644
From the collection of Cleveland Museum of Art
Ox-Cart. View between Ancona and Sinigaglia is a 1644 by Jan Both, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This print shows a winding road through a wooded landscape. Tall trees line the path, their branches bare or lightly covered in leaves. In the distance, a few buildings peek through the trees, and a river winds below. Near the bottom, a group of people and animals—likely oxen—walk along the road, while others sit or work beside it. The artist paid close attention to how light falls on the trees and ground, making some areas look darker and others brighter. This helps the scene feel real and three-dimensional. Next, check out chiaroscuro to see how this lighting trick works.
Jan Dirksz Both was a Dutch painter, draughtsman, and etcher, who made an important contribution to the development of Dutch Italianate landscape painting.
