Man with a Penknife is a 1632 ink by Salomon Koninck, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows an older man sitting with his hands resting on his knees. He’s wearing a loose robe and a cap, and there’s a small box or book on the table in front of him. Behind him, a curtain or cloth hangs, and a bird perches on a branch above his shoulder. The artist used fine lines to create texture, especially in the man’s wrinkled face and the fabric. This style makes everything look detailed and almost three-dimensional. If you like this, check out etching to see how artists create prints like this.
Salomon (de) Koninck (1609 – buried 8 August 1656) was a Dutch painter of genre scenes and portraits, and an engraver.
