About this work

This sketch shows three people in a dimly lit room. One person sits with their back to us, reading cards spread on a table. Another leans in closely, watching their hands. A child stands nearby, peering over their shoulder. The lines are loose and quick, almost like scribbles, with shadows pooling heavily in the corners. The title at the bottom, *Tireuse de Cartes*, means "fortune teller" in French. The artist’s signature in the corner confirms it’s by Mariano Fortuny. Next, check out The Cleveland Museum of Art to see this sketch in person.
