About this work

Overview

Created circa 1470 by Siena’s early‑Renaissance artist Neroccio di Bartolomeo de’ Landi, this tempera panel portrays the Virgin Mary with the infant Christ. The work is presently housed in the Accademia Carrara, forming part of the museum’s collection of Italian devotional paintings.

Subject & Meaning

The composition presents Mary in a red garment and black veil, cradling the child who is modestly wrapped in a white cloth. Her gaze is lowered in a tender, contemplative manner, while the infant looks outward, his expression conveying innocence and curiosity, emphasizing the intimate bond between mother and son.

Technique & Style

Executed in tempera, the painting achieves luminous color and fine detail, especially evident in the richly rendered gold background that features delicate ornamental patterns. The medium allows for precise brushwork, giving the figures a smooth, almost sculptural quality characteristic of Neroccio’s Sienese style.

History & Provenance

Neroccio, a pupil of Vecchietta and later a studio partner of Francesco di Giorgio, produced this work amid a productive period that also yielded larger narrative pieces such as the scenes from the life of St. Benedict. The panel eventually entered the Accademia Carrara’s holdings, where it remains on display.
