This painting shows a dim, cluttered room with five people gathered around a wooden table. The walls are rough stone, and a wooden beam crosses the ceiling. One person sits in a bright red coat, while others wear simple clothes and caps. A barrel sits in the corner, and a small window lets in little light. Notice how dark shadows contrast with the few bright spots, like the red coat. This lighting trick makes the scene feel cozy but also a little mysterious.
