Created in 1587, the painting entered the Victoria and Albert Museum as a gift from Miss Margaret Coutts Trotter in 1882, where it carries the accession number 1449-1882. Another version of the portrait, also attributed to Pietro Malombra and measuring 134 by 104 centimeters, has a distinct provenance. That painting was acquired on the Milan art market in the 1970s and donated by the owner's father in 1979, remaining in a private collection. The existence of multiple versions reflects the common practice of replicating official ducal portraits for various civic or private purposes.
