On the Beach - At Berneval (Sur la plage - a Berneval) is a 1892 ink by Auguste Renoir, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a group of people on a beach. In the front, two women sit close together, wearing long dresses and wide-brimmed hats. Behind them, a few others stand or walk near the water, drawn in quick, loose lines. The whole scene looks like it was drawn fast, with soft shading and no hard edges. The artist focused on movement and light, leaving some areas almost blank. The paper has a rough texture, and the lines feel hurried, like a quick study. Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born on 25 February 1841 in Limoges, the son of a tailor and a seamstress.
