This small black-and-white print shows a man in a dark coat, looking right. The smooth shading around his face comes from mezzotint. It uses tiny grooves to catch light, like a slow photo. Mezzotint was new in the early 1800s. It let artists copy paintings in soft, velvety tones. This tiny Dodge portrait proves how fine the lines could be. Try looking up Saint-Mémin, Charles B. J.
