John Ashe is an oil-on-canvas portrait by Gilbert Stuart dated to 1794. The painting descended within the sitter's family in South Carolina, passing from his daughter Mary Sidney Ashe Gadsden to her granddaughter Jane Elizabeth Gadsden Doar, and likely to Jane's sister Harriett Ann Gadsden Doar. It subsequently descended through the Doar family to David Doar and his son Thomas Screven Doar.
In 1922, Charlotte Cordes Doar Shore of Sumter, South Carolina, sold the work through Frank W. Bayley of the Copley Gallery in Boston. It was consigned to M. Knoedler & Co. in New York in March 1923 and purchased on 26 March 1923 by collector Thomas B. Clarke of New York. Following Clarke's death, the painting was sold as part of his collection on 29 January 1936, again through Knoedler, to The A.W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust in Pittsburgh.
The Trust transferred the portrait to the National Gallery of Art in 1942 as part of the Andrew W. Mellon Collection, where it remains in Washington, D.C.
