Four Saints of the Benedictine Order is a 1766 ink by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows four robed figures in a dramatic, shadowy scene. One man stands tall, arms outstretched, holding a staff topped with leaves. The others kneel or lean forward, their faces turned upward as if listening. Angels hover in the background, their wings half-hidden in the dark. The figures wear simple, old-fashioned clothes, and the lighting creates deep contrasts. The artist used a technique that looks like scratching into metal to make the lines. Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (August 30, 1727 – March 3, 1804) was an Italian painter and printmaker in etching. He was the son of artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and elder brother of Lorenzo Baldissera Tiepolo.
