About this work

This painting shows a blue-skinned man riding a white horse, wearing a golden crown and yellow cloth. Two women stand beside him—one holds a red fan, the other carries a tray with a covered dish. The background is flat green with a distant hill and trees, framed by a red border. The man’s blue skin and crown suggest he’s a divine figure, possibly from Hindu stories. The women’s bright clothes and careful poses add a sense of movement and life to the scene. Look up the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more works like this.

The story of this work

Overview

The painting depicts Krishna in an opaque watercolor on paper, created around 1760 by an unknown artist. He stands in a yellow dhoti with a gold peacock crown, resting his arm on a white cow near a stream, facing two gopis—one greeting him with folded hands and the other holding an object covered by a rumal. A pale green hillside with a rocky outcrop and dark foliage forms the background, framed by a red border. The work and a related piece were found by the vendor at a flea market in Toulouse.
