About this work

This painting features a woman sitting cross-legged on a blue flower, surrounded by two white birds. She wears an orange dress with a red sash and has long black hair. The birds have red beaks and hold objects in their beaks. The woman's hands are raised, and she wears jewelry. The background is beige, with green leaves and pink flowers. The woman's attire and the birds suggest a religious or mythological theme. The style of the painting appears to be a mix of realism and impressionism. The painting's use of color and composition is reminiscent of the Impressionism movement.

The story of this work

Overview

The artwork is a painting created in 1880 using opaque watercolour on paper, depicting Gaja Lakshmi, a form of Lakshmi shown being lustrated by elephants. In the composition, Lakshmi is seated on a blue lotus, dressed in red and yellow garments, with two elephants positioned behind her. The piece was acquired in 1949 alongside two other works from the Church Missionary Society through Mrs E.M. Milford.
