Virgin and Child under a Canopy is a 1524 unspecified by Unknown, a Flemish Baroque painting work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
You see Mary holding baby Jesus under a red-and-gold canopy. The folds of her blue robe spill across the floor, and the child reaches for a small bird. The tiny coat of arms at the bottom has never been matched to a family or city. Scholars think the painting came from Bruges or Antwerp in the early 1500s, but no one knows who painted it. Look up paintings from the south netherlands, 16th century to see more works like this one.
Scholars continue to debate the identity of this artist and the original source of the painting. The small coat of arms and initials at the bottom have not yet been identified. The arms may refer to a family, a city, or a bishopric. The style seems to relate to Bruges painting of the early 1500s, however the slightly mannered treatment of the child may point to Antwerp.
