This painting shows a framed portrait inside a larger frame. The outer frame is green with gold trim, and the inner frame is dark with a light blue background. Inside, a man in a white wig and red coat sits against a patterned curtain. The note below says it’s a copy of an older painting of Warren Hastings. The colors are bright but simple, and the man’s face is centered in a black oval. Look up Victoria and Albert Museum to see more works like this.

The story of this work

Overview

An opaque watercolour on paper from 1800 depicts Warren Hastings in a portrait, shown wearing a scarlet coat and white stock. A pinkish mauve curtain appears on one side of the composition. The work is a copy of a contemporary painting of Hastings, who served as Governor General of India from 1774 to 1785. Below the image, handwritten text identifies the subject and notes it as a copy from an original portrait held at Jaipur.
