Erasmus is a 1650 ink by Wallerant Vaillant, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This is a black-and-white portrait of a man in a dark hat and high collar. His face is serious, with a slight smile and a bit of stubble. The fabric of his clothes looks textured, and his hands rest on a ledge or table. The artist used shading to make the face pop against the dark background. This style was common in Baroque art. Next, check out chiaroscuro to see how light and shadow create drama.
Wallerant Vaillant (30 May 1623 – 28 August 1677) was a painter of the Dutch Golden Age and one of the first artists to use the mezzotint technique, which he probably helped to develop.
