About this work

This painting shows a naked woman sitting on a rock, leaning back against a small winged boy. She holds a mirror while he looks at her reflection. Behind them, a dark sky looms with a half-moon and clouds. To the left, a grimacing mask hangs on a pole, and a horned creature peeks out from the shadows. The woman’s skin glows against the dark background, thanks to the way light and shadow play across her body. The artist used bold contrasts to make certain parts pop. Next, look up chiaroscuro to see how this lighting trick works in other paintings.
